Carlos Cordoba. Every spring, the entangled roots of the water hyacinths form floating islands that provide a habitat for insects, reptiles, amphibians and even marsh deer. The Guarani Indians, the first inhabitants of the delta, gathered the plant for its many medicinal properties.
