More than 300 hives colonize the roofs and gardens of Paris. That they thrive compared to their country cousins seems a paradox, but the city is comparatively pesticide-free and provides a variety of bloom from spring to fall. It is a veritable honey bee paradise.
Parisians have been seized by a passion for bees: suppliers of beekeeping supplies have recorded record sales since the beginning of the year, and beekeeping classes at the apiary in the Luxembourg Gardens were deluged with registration requests in just a few hours. An awareness of the decline of the bees prompts the city dwellers' new interest, as well as a need to recover lost ties with nature.
The Paris beekeepers may well contribute to the salvation of the bees; their hives can produce up to 100 kilos of honey per year, as opposed to an average of 10 to 20 kilos for those in the fields.
